Caracas, Venezuela – One week after twin earthquakes devastated Venezuela, the nation continues grappling with the unprecedented tragedy.
As of Friday, the death toll has reached 2,645 following two successive earthquakes that struck less than a minute apart on June 24, measuring magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 respectively.
The catastrophic quakes left roads cracked, buildings toppled, and thousands of lives fundamentally altered.
With nearly 38,500 people still missing, officials expect the death toll to rise significantly. The Venezuelan government has reportedly ordered 10,000 body bags, according to UN reports.
Rescue operations continue as international teams navigate through rubble piles, maintaining hope for survivor discoveries.
Local volunteers have joined these efforts, utilizing hammers, pickaxes, and shovels in late-night search operations.
In La Guaira, one of the hardest-hit coastal cities, numerous high-rise apartment complexes lie in ruins. The acrid scent of decomposing bodies carried by Caribbean breezes mixes with vulture circling overhead.
Displaced residents crowd city streets, watching rescue work intently. While some cling to hope for miracles, others simply seek the chance to lay their loved ones to rest.
With thousands displaced from their homes, public parks and squares have transformed into makeshift tent camps.
Grieving families have channeled their sorrow into anger, accusing authorities of constructing substandard public housing and neglecting essential safety protocols.
Critics also blame the United Socialist Party, which has governed Venezuela for over a quarter century, alleging that corruption and inadequate public services hindered effective crisis response.
Interim President Delcy Rodríguez defended the government’s response efforts, contending that faster action wasn’t possible.
Survivors shared their experiences with Al Jazeera—including their trauma during the earthquakes, perspectives on governmental response, and adaptation since the disaster.
