Veteran Nollywood Icon Olu Jacobs Passes Away at 84

Olu Jacobs, one of Nigeria’s most celebrated actors, whose career spanned decades across theatre, television, and film, has died at the age of 84.

His wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, announced his death and requested privacy for the family during their period of mourning.

In a statement, Silva referred to her husband as “The Lion of Lufodo,” describing his life as one “well lived and fought.”

His notable film credits include My Kingdom, Covert Operation, and One Fine Day.

Widely regarded as a founding father of Nollywood—Nigeria’s vibrant film industry—Jacobs commanded deep respect and admiration nationwide.

“We call on all bloggers and social media influencers to respect our family’s privacy at this time,” Silva urged in her statement.

Born on 11 July 1942, Jacobs trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London before launching a career that featured roles in British television productions and international films.

He later emerged as a defining figure in Nigeria’s film industry, starring in numerous local productions and earning acclaim for his commanding screen presence and versatility.

Spanning more than five decades, his career garnered several major honours, including the African Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role and various lifetime achievement accolades.

In 2011, Jacobs was awarded the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) for his contributions to the Nigerian film industry.

Together with Silva, Jacobs co-founded the Lufodo Group and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts, leaving a legacy that extends beyond performance to the training and development of future artists.

In recent years, Jacobs had withdrawn from the public eye due to ill health.
