Rubio has denied reports that he is contemplating stepping down from his position in advance of a 2028 presidential campaign.
Rubio told The New York Times that his intention has always been to serve through the end of Trump’s term.
“I enjoy the work I’m doing,” Rubio said, adding that he laughs when people claim he will leave, asking, “Which one?”
Both the White House and the U.S. State Department dismissed reports that Rubio might resign following this week’s midterm defeats, labeling the claims as “fake news.”
Defence Secretary Hegseth, however, confronts a more uncertain political outlook.
Trump and Vice President JD Vance have attributed the Republican setbacks to the Iran war, which they say enabled Democrats to secure full control of both the House and the Senate.
In a telephone interview with ABC News, Trump said he had received calls concerning Hegseth but emphasized that he has every intention of retaining him.
Later on Thursday, he told White House reporters that Pete Hegseth has performed a fantastic job, citing achievements such as the January arrest of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and the ongoing Iran war, now in its ninth month.
