Nairobi — WHO Director‑General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus urged parliamentarians worldwide to harness their legislative and budgetary authority to reinforce national health systems, diminish reliance on external assistance, and boost resilience against upcoming disease outbreaks.
During remarks at the 153rd Assembly of the Inter‑Parliamentary Union, which gathered lawmakers from across the globe, Tedros stressed that governments must translate universal health coverage into tangible practice while prioritizing investments in robust, home‑based health infrastructure.
“At a time when multilateralism is strained, health reminds us why international cooperation remains essential,” Tedros observed.
He called on lawmakers to wield their legislative muscle to advance universal health coverage and deploy their fiscal power to create health sovereignty, thereby reducing aid dependencies.
“He furthermore urges politicians to tighten oversight of pandemic preparedness and to accelerate the uptake of the WHO Pandemic Agreement.”

“Health must stay a unifying force,” Tedros declared, pleading with legislators to persist in championing health, equity, and the populations they serve.
Beyond rhetoric, the WHO chief issued his appeal amid mounting pressure on multilateral institutions and a pressing need for more resilient, self‑reliant health systems, underscoring the urgency of decisive action.
