The Yankees began the season with four consecutive victories, yet this early momentum failed to alleviate worries about a recurring midseason downturn in the Bronx.
This year they hold a 18‑19 record since June 1 and are trending toward the same losing stretch that previously cost them the AL East title and ultimately the AL pennant to the Blue Jays.
Although fans may feel lingering anxiety from past seasons, oddsmakers appear unmoved by the Yankees’ recent slump.
“We place the Yankees among the top MLB teams,” said DraftKings Director of Sports Operations Johnny Avello.
The Yankees are still favored to capture the American League at +230 odds on DraftKings. The Rays sit three games ahead and are 6‑3 against New York, listed at +475. New York also holds the second‑best World Series odds (+550) behind the Dodgers.
What fuels the optimism among bookmakers?
Avello believes the veteran Yankees have simply lacked the drive to reach their peak performance, though he isn’t alarmed by the current situation.
“Baseball’s a 162‑game marathon,” Avello noted. “Staying motivated night after night is challenging. They aren’t deliberately underperforming, but motivation can wane during the summer months.”
The bright side is the Yankees have a history of late‑season surges that put them back in postseason contention. They posted the AL’s best record in the past two seasons, reaching the World Series in 2024 before an ALDS elimination the previous year.
FanGraphs projects both the Yankees and Rays to win 90 games, and assigns the Yankees the second‑best probability of winning the World Series, trailing only the Dodgers.
Nevertheless, this optimism could evaporate instantly if Aaron Judge does not return to the lineup; without him, Avello warned that the Yankees’ odds would shift dramatically at DraftKings.
For the moment, DraftKings remains optimistic about the Yankees, provided they improve after the All-Star break.
“The Yankees have fallen short of their potential, but they can turn things around,” Avello said. “A strong second half could alter everything.”
