While much of the Boston Red Sox batting order struggled to find rhythm early in the season, Wilyer Abreu remained energetic and productive.
As the World Baseball Classic champion, Abreu launched three homers in the first six games, propelling his OPS above 1.000 and maintaining that mark through mid‑April.
Although he sustained a team‑leading batting average throughout the campaign, Abreu’s power output stalled; he managed only six homers this year compared to 22 in just 115 games the previous season.
Entering Game 2 of the Red Sox’s home series versus the Orioles, the right‑field starter was amid a 20‑game homerless stretch.
His previous long ball came on May 8 against the Rays, a 427‑foot drive that cleared the deepest reaches of Fenway.
On Wednesday night, Abreu ignited the offense with an RBI single in the first inning, driving in Jarren Duran to put Boston ahead.
In the third inning, with a runner in scoring position, he fell behind 1‑2 but fought back, fouling off two off‑speed pitches before connecting.
On his eighth pitch, he squared up a high fastball down the right‑field line, sending it soaring over Pesky’s Pole for his first home run in nearly a month.
The entire Red Sox lineup erupted against the Orioles on Wednesday, plating eight runs over five innings behind another strong start from Payton Tolle, offering fans a glimpse of the June fireworks they hope to see at Fenway.
