WPL 2027 Auction Preview: Retained Cores, Key Releases, and Purse Breakdown for All Five Franchises

The WPL 2027 retention window has set the stage for the tournament’s next chapter, with all five franchises opting to preserve their existing cores rather than pursue major overhauls. A total of 63 players, including 23 overseas recruits, have been retained, leaving 27 slots to be filled at the auction.

Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru have kept the bulk of their title-winning squad intact, while runners-up Delhi Capitals have also secured a strong foundation. Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Giants, and UP Warriorz have similarly balanced continuity with the need to address specific gaps ahead of the bidding war.

RCB released Grace Harris but retained their core group. Delhi Capitals, perennial finalists, parted ways with Sneh Rana and Alana King. Mumbai Indians released G Kamalini due to a scheduling conflict with the India U19 fixtures, while UP Warriorz let go of veteran spinner Asha Sobhana.

The 2026 season culminated in a thrilling final where RCB chased down 204 against Delhi Capitals by six wickets to claim a second title. Smriti Mandhana topped the run charts with 377 runs, while Gujarat Giants’ Sophie Devine claimed 17 wickets to earn Player of the Tournament honors.

The next milestone is the WPL 2027 auction in Kochi on October 28, where franchises will deploy their remaining purses to finalize squads. The fifth season is slated to run from January 14 to February 7, 2027.
