Yota Tsuji has clarified that he is open to competing in non-title matches in AEW and did not boycott Forbidden Door. The IWGP Heavyweight Champion caused a stir prior to this year’s event when hinting he might skip it.
In a recent interview with Tokyo Sports, Tsuji addressed the NJPW and AEW relationship. He explained he had no problem with the show itself, but was concerned about granting an IWGP Heavyweight Championship match to someone who hadn’t earned it.
“Many believe I boycotted the Forbidden Door joint event in June, but that isn’t the case,” Tsuji stated. “I simply don’t intend to easily give away an IWGP title match to a wrestler from another promotion.”
He added, “Conversely, if it’s not a title match, I’m fine with going to AEW. If someone challenges me, I’ll accept, even without the belt on the line.”
Tony Khan responded to Tsuji’s earlier comments, expressing great respect for the NJPW star. He noted, “He’s always felt very respected by AEW when he visits, and I personally feel New Japan wrestlers receive significant respect from the company and myself.”
