Yash Thakur Reflects on India Call-Up Journey and Praises Shreyas Iyer’s Leadership

Yash Thakur has shared the emotional moment of learning about his selection for India’s Zimbabwe series, marking his international debut on July 25. The right-arm pacer, who took two wickets on his first appearance, credited his consistent domestic performances with Vidarbha, impactful India A outings, and a strong IPL campaign with Punjab Kings for the opportunity.

“Harsh Dubey and I had just landed in Nagpur. While collecting my luggage, my phone started buzzing with messages and calls from friends announcing my selection. I had no idea beforehand—I checked online to confirm I was named for the Zimbabwe tour,” Thakur told Jio Star.

“It’s surreal. From Under-19 cricket to Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy, IPL, and India A, each stage presented challenges I worked hard to overcome. Wearing the India jersey feels like the culmination of that journey,” he added.

Thakur highlighted his development through domestic cricket and his time with Punjab Kings, where he built a strong rapport with captain Shreyas Iyer—a bond that continues at the international level.

“Shreyas understands my strengths and the phases where I’m most effective, whether it’s the powerplay, middle overs, or death bowling. During the IPL, we discussed strategies, and now I’m fortunate to play under his leadership in the national team,” Thakur said.

He further praised Iyer’s calm demeanor and leadership approach, stating, “He remains composed regardless of the situation. He consults bowlers directly, asks about our plans, and trusts us to execute them. That’s what makes him a bowler’s captain.”
