Gotham FC solidify dynasty status
Gotham required only a draw to claim their inaugural Shield, but they secured victory 2-0 at Sports Illustrated Stadium. Entering the playoffs as the top seed, the East Coast side builds on a historic 30-match season—league’s first of its kind—despite late-season inconsistencies caused by injuries to Bruninha and Jordynn Dudley. Forward Midge Purce created the space for Guro Reiten to score the decisive goal.
The demanding season impacted the league as a whole, though Gotham’s injury woes were particularly pronounced. Defenders like Bruninha and rookie Jordynn Dudley saw season-ending exits, while striker Jaedyn Shaw sat out mid-October with an injury. Shaw, returning in a leg sleeve, scored the winner after substitution.
The final match secured the title, and the return of Shaw and Rose Lavelle provided vital leadership after a season of deep rotations. Midfielder Jaelin Howell, a team leader in minutes played, suffered a right ankle injury early on but will be re-evaluated for the quarterfinals. Gotham’s championship run remains untouched.
Seattle Reign clinch final playoff spot
The eighth playoff berth came down to a decisive battle among three clubs. Seattle Reign controlled their fate, while North Carolina Courage and Denver Summit each needed to take the other out to ensure Orlando Pride won.
Seattle’s identity this year emphasized organization and defending, and their 1-0 win over Orlando truly represented the squad’s approach. Motivated by the playoffs and tributes to long-time veteran Jess Fishlock, the Reign surged past the hour mark on a set piece involving two flicks, sealing the goal with a clinical finish by center back Jordyn Bugg.
