Aaron Boone Leads Yankees to Playoffs Amid Injuries, Setting Up Title Hopes

MINNEAPOLIS — When the Yankees secured a postseason berth Monday night, manager Aaron Boone joined an elite group of MLB leaders.

Boone became the second skipper in league history to reach the postseason in at least eight of his first nine seasons, matching the Dodgers’ Dave Roberts (who has done it in each of his first 11). He is also the third Yankees manager to achieve eight playoff appearances in his first nine years, following Joe Torre and Casey Stengel.

Roberts, Torre and Stengel have combined for 14 World Series titles, while Boone is still searching for his first championship. In New York, that is ultimately how he will be measured—not merely by consistent postseason appearances.

This season, however, the Yankees have battled a cascade of injuries to their star players. Despite losing Aaron Judge for 84 games, Giancarlo Stanton for 124, Max Fried for 71, Gerrit Cole for 51, and others, Boone guided the team to a strong position in the American League with a chance to run deep in October.

“He’s our guy,” Judge said in the celebratory clubhouse at Target Field. “He’s the one we go to battle for every single night and just lucky and blessed to have him here, to be able to fight for a guy like that. He loves every single guy in this room and we’re going to fight till the end for him.”

The Yankees’ resilience is underscored by the list of missed games: 84 without Judge, 124 without Stanton, 25 without Cody Bellinger, 27 without Trent Grisham, 22 without Ryan McMahon, 51 without Gerrit Cole, 71 without Max Fried, 40 without Carlos Rodón, 21 without Ryan Weathers, and 150 without Clarke Schmidt, among others.

Every club endures injuries, but few survive them as the Yankees have, currently on pace to match the 94 wins posted in each of the last two seasons.

Bench coach Brad Ausmus praised Boone’s effort under the adversity. “It’s very tough for a Yankee manager to win Manager of the Year,” Ausmus noted. “Obviously Kevin Cash and Will Venable will be strong candidates. But with the job Boone has done this year with the injuries, keeping the group as one cohesive unit, I think he should definitely be in the discussion.”

The Yankees faced a difficult stretch during Judge’s three‑month absence, highlighted by a 5‑15 skid in late June and early July.

Even after that downturn, the offense remained sluggish, and most games were low‑scoring, nerve‑wracking contests.

Although the slump threatens to cost the team the AL East title, Boone remains confident that his club can peak in the postseason and finally capture a long‑overdue championship.

“It’s not easy,” Austin Wells said. “You lose guys left and right at different parts of the season. Having to piece wins together, keep us right there in the division race throughout the whole year, he does an impressive job. Definitely a testament to him. Looking forward to more of that, more winning decisions and keep leading us.”
