Michael Goessling, a 58-year-old man from St. Louis, recently experienced an extraordinary reunion when he discovered that his biological father is none other than legendary musician Michael McDonald.
Goessling shared his remarkable story with KCTV 5. He was adopted as an infant by Paul and Kay Goessling, who he describes as wonderful parents. “Always knew I was adopted,” Goessling said. “Had a wonderful childhood. I could not pick two finer folks to raise me.”
Despite having a loving adoptive family, Goessling remained curious about his biological parents, who were both teenagers—just 14 years old—when he was put up for adoption. His search took an unexpected turn when a previously unknown half-brother, who had taken a 23andMe DNA test, reached out to him. “Within 36 hours, he got an email notifying him: Michael Goessling, half-brother, St. Louis,” Goessling recalled. “And that’s how this all began.”
On his 58th birthday, Goessling met his birth mother in person for the first time, and shortly after, he spoke with his biological father over the phone. When he asked about his father’s profession, the response was staggering. His dad mentioned he was a musician who would be touring through St. Louis that summer.
“And I said, ‘Are you Michael McDonald?'” Goessling recounted. “And he said, ‘Yeah, I’m afraid so.'” As it turned out, it truly was the iconic Michael McDonald—known for his work with the Doobie Brothers and hits like “What a Fool Believes,” “This Is It,” and “I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near)”—making this discovery all the more remarkable, especially since they shared the same first name, though that was purely coincidental.
Goessling’s biological parents have maintained a connection over the years, often discussing their son. McDonald expressed his longstanding concerns and relief upon learning of Goessling’s wellbeing. “We always talked about him. And it always came down to our greatest fear was, how did life treat him?” McDonald told the St. Louis outlet. “I always carried that guilt with me. But just to know that he was okay and that he had a good life—and a life certainly that I wouldn’t have been able to afford him at that time—was a great reward. The real rock stars in this story are his adoptive parents.”
The emotional journey culminated when McDonald and Goessling finally met in person. “When he first saw me, he put his arms out, gave me a big old bear hug and told me he loved me, and I told him the same,” Goessling shared.
During their meeting, McDonald also learned he had become a grandfather. “Yeah, I’m still wrapping my head around that,” McDonald said with a laugh. He continued, “My daughter-in-law is just the daughter-in-law you’d hope for. And the kids are two of the greatest kids you’d ever meet. I’m just so proud of them.”
