Angels Defeat Royals 1-0 Behind Reid Detmers’ 11-Kound Eight-Inning Start

Reid Detmers delivered a dominant performance, allowing just two hits while recording 11 strikeouts over eight shutout innings, leading the Los Angeles Angels to a 1-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday night in Anaheim. Nolan Schanuel’s three-hit performance capped the scoring, driving in the winning run in the eighth inning.

The win marked Detmers’ first on the road in 22 starts, breaking a tie with Kutter Crawford and Alex Cobb for the most consecutive away starts without a victory in American League history (21). It also ended Detmers’ own nine-start winless streak. Making his 100th career major league start, Detmers retired the first 11 batters he faced before Jac Caglianone’s fourth-inning single snapped his retired streak.

Detmers struck out the side in both the third and seventh innings, throwing 92 pitches total with 68 for strikes. He left the game after completing his eight-inning workload.

Closer Ben Joyce earned his second save, striking out two batters in a 1-2-3 ninth inning. His fastball registered as high as 104.5 and 104.4 mph on the radar gun.

Adam Frazier contributed two hits for Los Angeles, which secured its first win in five games against Kansas City this season. For the Royals, Nate Pearson (2-1) took the loss after allowing the game’s sole run on one hit and one walk in the eighth inning.

Kansas City’s talented start from Randy Dobnak, who allowed four hits, walked two and struck out six over 5 2/3 innings, went unlucky as the offense failed to support him. The Royals have lost five of their last six games.

The decisive eighth inning unfolded with Wade Meckler drawing a walk to lead off. Jose Siri raced home from second after stealing the base following Mike Trout’s pop-up. Schanuel then delivered a line drive single to right field, slipping under the diving Caglianone, which closed the scoring.
