Sanju Samson’s omission from India’s squad for the forthcoming three‑match T20I series against Zimbabwe has generated considerable discussion among supporters and former players. A senior BCCI official has clarified that the move is a rest period, not a exclusion.
The BCCI named a 15‑player contingent for the Zimbabwe tour, set to commence on July 23, and selected Punjab Kings wicket‑keeper‑batter Prabhsimran Singh to replace Samson after his standout IPL 2026 season.
His exclusion follows his omission from the playing XI in the second T20I against England, where 15‑year‑old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made his senior international debut in Manchester.
The Kerala batsman managed only six runs in three innings against Ireland and England, prompting speculation that his exclusion is driven by workload management and a strategic intent to provide younger talent a chance in the short bilateral series.
A senior BCCI source added that Samson is still part of India’s broader plans and is slated to participate in the Asian Games later this year.
“Why is this surprising that Sanju has been rested for Zimbabwe? People who are saying this should know Sanju is in the Asian Games squad in September. So those who are criticising the selection committee can do a bit of homework. What’s the point of carrying Samson when he won’t play? He is a senior guy,” a senior source was quoted as saying by NDTV Sports.
Although he has been in a recent scoring drought, Samson delivered a memorable campaign at the T20 World Cup 2026, contributing 321 runs in five innings at an average of 80.25 and a strike rate of 199.37 as India claimed the title.
His performances secured him the Player of the Tournament accolade, and he also posted two centuries during the IPL 2026 season.
Nevertheless, the rise of teenage opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi appears to have swayed the selectors, who are keen to give the youngster a prolonged run in the T20I side.
Samson was not the sole notable absentee; fast bowlers Prasidh Krishna, Harshit Rana, and Arshdeep Singh, as well as all‑rounders Washington Sundar and Ravi Bishnoi, were also omitted from the Zimbabwe squad.
