Belgian virologist Marc Van Ranst notes that although plague is often perceived as a medieval affliction, annual cases continue to emerge in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Madagascar. He emphasizes that the laboratory confirmation elevates this particular incident to a more serious level.

Van Ranst also addressed the current winter resurgence of COVID-19, describing the circulating strain as milder. He does not anticipate this season will mirror the severe conditions witnessed in 2020 or 2021.
