Conor McGregor, preparing to mark his 38th birthday, has announced plans to return to combat sports following a right leg injury sustained during UFC 329. He stated the injury will necessitate surgical intervention.
In an Instagram post, McGregor outlined his recovery strategy: “Surgery. Prehab. Return to martial arts practice. Go again.” He added, “Final fight of the contract. Praise God!”
During Saturday’s Las Vegas bout, McGregor suffered an apparent knee injury early in the first round against Max Holloway. The exact nature of the injury and timeline for his comeback remain undisclosed.
Prior to the fight, McGregor confirmed he entered the match without existing injuries, stating he trained extensively and showed no symptoms pre-fight.
“My head gasket is gone. Destroyed,” he wrote. “I had no injury / injuries going into the fight. This came out of nowhere. I am beyond dark here. I can only describe it as hell.”
Despite only one fight remaining under his current UFC contract, his future with the organization remains uncertain.
UFC CEO Dana White has expressed support for McGregor’s potential return and is considering various scenarios for his next match, including five proposed opponent matchups had he defeated Holloway.
McGregor’s history includes recovering from a torn ACL in 2013 and a broken leg in 2021, both sustained in previous bouts with Holloway and Dustin Poirier, respectively.
