With Costco’s recent announcement that it will soon offer Medicare Advantage plans to its club members, many consumers are wondering if they will finally get “warehouse club pricing” on their healthcare coverage.
Navigating Medicare Advantage plans is notoriously challenging. With highly variable benefits, complex multilayered costs, and strict provider networks, shoppers must carefully evaluate doctor and hospital availability before committing.
Purchasing a plan from a highly trusted brand like Costco (COST) certainly has its appeal. However, prospective enrollees need to look beyond the brand name and evaluate the actual plan details.
Healthcare That Is Easier to Navigate
Costco’s Medicare plans have not launched yet, as the partnership with SCAN Group, a not-for-profit provider operating in a handful of states, is still pending regulatory approval. The initial rollout will be restricted to select markets, with plans to offer Medicare Advantage coverage in two states and a Medicare supplement plan in just one, according to a Wall Street Journal report.
“Older adults seek healthcare that is easier to navigate, highly responsive to their unique needs, and rooted in organizations they know and trust,” Dr. Sachin H. Jain, CEO of SCAN Group, stated in a release.
If Costco is venturing into Medicare services, could other warehouse clubs like BJ’s or Sam’s Club follow suit? And what about retail and tech giants like Amazon?
As of now, neither BJ’s, Sam’s Club, nor Amazon have announced plans to mirror Costco’s move. While Amazon continues to expand its Amazon One Medical services—including pharmacy integration and on-demand medical care—the tech giant has not officially signaled specific plans to enter the Medicare Advantage market.
Understanding Medicare Advantage Plans
Medicare is a government-sponsored health insurance program primarily available to U.S. citizens aged 65 and older. It is important to note that coverage is not entirely free, and enrollees are responsible for various out-of-pocket costs.
Original Medicare includes hospital insurance (Part A) and medical insurance (Part B), with optional prescription drug coverage (Part D) available through independent providers. Under Original Medicare, there is no annual cap on out-of-pocket spending.
A Medicare supplement plan, such as Plan G or Plan K, is an optional addition that helps cover remaining out-of-pocket expenses not addressed by Original Medicare.
Medicare Advantage (Part C) is an alternative that bundles Parts A, B, and D into a single plan. These plans often provide extra benefits not covered by Original Medicare, while also establishing a maximum limit on your annual out-of-pocket expenses.
How to Shop for a Medicare Advantage Plan
Danielle Kunkle Roberts, author of “10 Costly Medicare Mistakes You Can’t Afford to Make,” described Costco’s entry into the Medicare Advantage market as “an interesting move.”
“Having an established retail giant like Costco coordinating the insurer, pharmacy, and added benefits—such as hearing coverage or prescription savings—adds a layer of convenience. This integrated approach could lead to fewer network surprises and billing issues,” Kunkle Roberts explained to Yahoo Finance.
However, she warned that “convenience does not automatically translate to the best financial deal.”
Kunkle Roberts emphasized that Medicare Advantage plans are federally regulated insurance products, meaning they do not actually feature “warehouse club pricing” simply because they are sold through Costco.
“Consumers should still thoroughly review the plan’s Star Ratings, verify that their preferred doctors are in-network, and compare the total costs before enrolling,” she advised.
The National Council on Aging recommends that prospective enrollees ask themselves four key questions before selecting a Medicare Advantage plan:
-
Will you be able to keep your current doctors?
-
Does the plan provide coverage when you are traveling?
-
Are your current prescriptions included in the formulary?
-
What are the expected out-of-pocket costs?
