The family of Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old from Mississippi whose body was recovered days after he vanished during a holiday boating trip, is demanding a full accounting of the circumstances surrounding his death.
Wells failed to return with his friends from an Independence Day excursion to Horn Island. His body was discovered in the surrounding waters on July 6, two days after he was reported missing.
While the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office initially stated that no foul play was suspected, investigators are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, retained by the family, has cited conflicting witness accounts and commissioned an independent autopsy.
An initial autopsy was performed earlier this week, though results remain pending. Coroner Bruce Lynd confirmed the identification via dental records, according to CBS News, the BBC’s U.S. media partner.
Christine Wonsley, his mother, raised the alarm when her son did not return on the evening of July 4. Wells, a football player at Southwest Mississippi Community College, was remembered by his coach as a “happy-go-lucky kid.”
A multi-agency search involving local, state, and federal authorities located his body off the island’s coast on July 6.
The National Park Service notes that Horn Island is undeveloped, lacking staff, potable water, shelter, facilities, or communication infrastructure.
“They have serious, unanswered questions about the circumstances that left Nolan alone on the island and about how he died,” Crump stated.
He highlighted discrepancies regarding whether Wells departed the island with his group or remained behind.
Both parents told CBS Mornings they do not believe their son would have voluntarily stayed on the island alone. “That is not in his character,” said his father, Elmore Wonsley.
The Sheriff’s Office has formally requested that anyone present on or near Horn Island on July 4 contact the department, specifically asking for original, unedited photos or videos depicting any alleged altercations or showing Wells.
