The Royal Dutch Cricket Association (KNCB) has announced the appointment of former South Africa captain Johan Botha as a consultant to the Netherlands Men’s national team. Botha will link up with the Dutch side for the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 tri-series featuring Namibia and Nepal, scheduled to be played in Utrecht later this month.

Now 44, Botha represented South Africa in five Test matches, 78 One Day Internationals, and 40 Twenty20 Internationals between 2005 and 2012, serving as captain of the Proteas in both white-ball formats. The right-arm off-spinner guided his country to a 4-1 ODI series victory over Australia in 2008-09 during his leadership tenure. Following his retirement from international cricket, he has built a diverse coaching portfolio across franchise competitions, with assignments in the Pakistan Super League, Big Bash League, Major League Cricket, Caribbean Premier League, and with Queensland Cricket in Australia.

Botha Shares His Thoughts on the Dutch Opportunity

“I really look forward to joining the Netherlands team in this important period in the World Cup League 2 against Namibia and Nepal. Having tracked their progress over the past few years, it will be great to work with the players, coaches and staff,” said Botha, in a statement published by the ICC.

KNCB High Performance Board member Sybrand Engelbrecht welcomed the appointment, highlighting Botha’s extensive coaching credentials in global T20 tournaments.

“We’re very pleased to have Johan on board. He is an extremely experienced coach, with stints in the PSL, CPL, MLC, Big Bash and Queensland cricket,” said Engelbrecht.

Netherlands’ Road Ahead in League 2

Botha comes on board at a pivotal stage of the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 campaign. The Netherlands, Namibia, and Nepal are each set to contest four matches across a six-game series hosted in Utrecht. The Dutch squad is anticipated to be unveiled shortly after July 9.

The Netherlands will begin their campaign against Nepal on July 23, with all six fixtures taking place at the Kampong Cricket Club with a local start time of 11:00 AM. The series concludes on July 31, when the Dutch take on Namibia in the final matchup.
