The German government has formally attributed a recent drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport to Russia, announcing a series of retaliatory measures, including the closure of a Russian consulate.
An explosives-laden drone was discovered near a Ukrainian aircraft on the evening of August 4 and was subsequently defused. At the time, German officials described the incident as representing a significant escalation in threat level.
Western intelligence agencies and government officials have repeatedly accused Moscow of conducting a broad campaign of sabotage and disruption across Europe. These operations are widely believed to be aimed at weakening international support for Ukraine and destabilising European nations.
Speaking on Tuesday, German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that forensic analysis revealed characteristics consistent with Russian hybrid warfare tactics. “The drone configuration, components, explosives, and detonator are known to us from other Russian hybrid operations and its war against Ukraine,” Dobrindt said.
The Interior Minister noted that while the device demonstrated a high degree of technical sophistication and meticulous planning, the actual execution appeared to have been delegated to low-level operatives.
Addressing reporters in Berlin, Dobrindt indicated that intelligence findings point to individuals acting on behalf of Russian state entities, though he declined to identify specific agencies involved. “Taken together, the police investigations, the pattern and intelligence findings prove a Russian responsibility for the attempted attack at Leipzig airport,” he concluded.
