Harry Kane’s Record 73-Goal Season Sparks Ballon d’Or Bid, Champions League Still the Ultimate Goal

Harry Kane is among the leading contenders for the 2026 Ballon d’Or after a historic 2025-26 season that ranks as one of the most prolific individual campaigns in soccer history. While reaffirming his commitment to Champions League glory, the English star has shifted focus to personal honors, calling it “by far” his best professional year.

Kane finished the 2025-26 season with 73 goals, the second-highest single-season tally ever, surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo’s 69-goal mark from 2011-12 and trailing only Lionel Messi’s record 82 goals that same year. Despite the historic scoring feat, misses in both the Champions League final and the World Cup have kept the Ballon d’Or race fiercely competitive.

In an interview with TNT Sports on Monday, Kane acknowledged the voters’ role: “It’s out of my hands now—it’s up to the people who decide. The season I had was my best by far, and we’ll have to wait and see.”

France Football released its 30-player shortlist on Tuesday, with Kane joining three other Bayern Munich players—Dayot Upamecano, Luis Diaz, and Michael Olise. “I’m happy to be in contention, so we’ll have to wait and see,” Kane said.

Kane led Bayern to a clean sweep of domestic honors—the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, and DFL-Supercup—while on the international stage, Bayern were knocked out in the Champions League semifinals by PSG. Kane guided England to a third-place finish at the 2026 World Cup, their best result since lifting the trophy in 1966.

The Champions League: Kane’s Primary Objective

Kane’s 2023 transfer from Tottenham to Bayern Munich signaled his ambition to challenge for Europe’s top prize. Now in his fourth season, the English striker has made the Champions League the club’s overriding priority.

Reflecting on recent near-misses, Kane insisted the team is closer than ever: “We’re really close. Last year was heartbreaking—we lost to back-to-back winners on the narrowest of margins. This season, we’re saying it needs to be our year.”

Bayern’s recent Champions League exits have been agonizingly close: a 4-3 semifinal loss to eventual champions Real Madrid in 2023-24, a quarterfinal exit to Inter Milan (eventual finalists) by the same aggregate the next year, and a 6-5 semifinal defeat to PSG (champions) last season. Kane believes 2026-27 will be the season they finally break through.
