San Francisco 49ers defensive tackle Alfred Collins sustained a torn patellar tendon during practice this week, head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed. The veteran is now ruled out for the remainder of the season.
The organization had previously listed Collins as a limited participant during Tuesday’s practice session. (The 49ers were traveling in Australia, making it Wednesday locally.)
With Collins sidelined, the remaining defensive tackles on the roster include Osa Odighizuwa, CJ West, Gracen Halton, and James Thompson Jr. Compounding the depth concerns, Thompson missed the week’s first official practice due to a hamstring issue, while Halton was limited with an ankle injury.
To fill the void, the 49ers will likely elevate a practice squad defensive tackle, with Sebastian Valdez or Kevin Givens emerging as the top candidates for the upcoming matchup.
Collins, the franchise’s second-round pick in the 2025 draft, appeared in 16 games last season and registered 17 tackles, one sack, four quarterback hits, an interception, two passes defensed, and two forced fumbles.
The team spent the week in Melbourne preparing for their Thursday season opener against the Los Angeles Rams.
