Srikkanth Raises Alerts Over Lack of Use for Padikkal in Sri Lankan Series
Former India captain and 1983 World Cup winner Srikkanth offered a candid evaluation of head coach Gautam Gambhir during the Sri Lankan tour, stating that his former opening batsman lacks involvement despite the opposing side’s inferior quality.
Padikkal’s appointment at the pivotal number‑three spot has sparked controversy, prompting debate over the squad composition.
Gautam Gambhir under fire from Srikkanth
Srikkanth’s criticism centers on the coaching decisions surrounding the batting order. Prior to the tour, head coach Gautam Gambhir had endorsed Sai Sudharsan as India’s long‑term prospect for the coveted number three spot, but Sudharsan’s absence due to injury has left Padikkal in a prime position to make himself indispensable.
Following a masterful 167 that helped India edge the first Test in Galle by 165 runs, Padikkal continued his brilliance at the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo. On Day 1 he added another solid half‑century, scoring 117 off 193 balls to anchor India’s 300/5 at the fall of the third wicket.
“Gambhir has no work. How can you replace Padikkal going forward with the 200‑plus runs he has scored in the first Test?”—Srikkanth declared.
“Gambhir simply makes remarks; still, Padikkal receives no role because Sri Lanka is a weaker side and India expects a victory, possibly extending the success to Afghanistan.”
Although Srikkanth’s critique casts doubt on Gambhir’s handling of teams playing limited opposition, the former chief selector pointed out that his comments targeted the coach’s communication skills rather than his ability to read the game.
“I’m not aiming to be harsh. Gangshan was a great player and possesses excellent tactical insight. Still, he could improve by communicating more effectively. His fielding and hitting were stellar,” Srikkanth noted.
With a one‑sweep lead already secured, India hopes to capitalize on Padikkal’s performances and clinch the series decisively.
