The stories of Charles and his younger brother, Pierce, highlight how crucial eligibility becomes for a country with a smaller player base like Northern Ireland.
Players might be scouted, or their parents and agents may reach out directly to the Irish FA. On other occasions, clubs themselves will inform the association about eligible prospects.
Yet there are instances when opportunity simply depends on being in the right place at the right moment.
Joe Shields, who at the time led youth recruitment at Manchester City, connected with the Charles family and recognized that both brothers qualified for Northern Ireland through their mother, Mary, a native of the region.
After tracking Shea’s growth, Shields reached out to Andy Cousins—also at City working with young talents and maintaining ties with the Irish FA—and proposed that engaging with the Northern Ireland setup could benefit his development.
Cousins then introduced O’Neill to the Charles and Price families before the players earned their spots in the Club NI squad.
Although O’Neill claims he was simply “being polite and greeting everyone,” his gesture carried greater significance for emerging talents like Charles, leaving a memorable impression.
“It meant a lot to us, seeing the senior manager take such an interest in the youth teams,” said midfielder Charles, who has since earned 35 caps following his debut for Northern Ireland in March 2023.
“It showed that he genuinely pays attention to younger age groups and to players who might have a future in international football.”
“It helped me build relationships with the coaching staff and teammates and ultimately led to my first senior training camp and debut. That experience was truly special and highlighted how vital these development pathways really are.”
