iMessage allows extensive customization to match individual preferences
Apple’s iMessage has evolved significantly over the years. Recent updates have introduced features such as satellite messaging for emergency contacts in remote areas and aesthetic enhancements like customizable backgrounds. Staying current with these changes can be challenging, especially given Apple’s annual iOS releases.
Despite these improvements, many users report frustrations with their iMessage app layout. For example, frequently used apps may remain buried while rarely used ones dominate the dropdown menu. The solution lies in taking time to customize the app order.
Key functional updates began with the introduction of dedicated iMessage applications. Since iOS 18, several apps are installed by default. As of the latest iOS 27 update, fourteen apps are pre-installed, including features for sharing location, voice recordings, stickers, GIFs, music, photos, and polls. Apps like ESPN and Venmo further expand messaging capabilities. Fortunately, users retain control over the organization of these applications.

Before customizing your app layout, review how to access the iMessage dropdown menu. First, ensure the latest iOS is installed. After updating, open Messages and either tap an active conversation or press the compose button, represented by a pencil icon overlapping a white square in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
Once a conversation is open, tap the Plus (+) button beside your messages. Here, a comprehensive list of available iMessage applications is displayed. Hold down the desired app until the icon shrinks, drag it to its preferred position on the dropdown menu, and release your finger.
Adding additional apps is straightforward. Visit the App Store on your device, open Messages, start a conversation, and tap the Plus (+) symbol next to the circular blue App Store icon. Browse Apple’s catalog of popular applications or search for specific ones. Tap Get to download new apps. If an app requires purchase, a price will be shown instead of a Get button. To return to the App Store, swipe down or tap Close (X).
Further customizing your iMessage apps
Consider the sources of apps you install. For instance, in August 2026, OpenAI introduced iMessage integration into its ChatGPT app for Mac. While some welcomed the addition, others expressed privacy and security concerns. Additionally, numerous free apps rely on in-app purchases, which can quickly increase monthly costs.
Family Sharing plan members can manage in-app purchases through iOS 27’s enhanced parental controls. A useful feature is the Ask To Buy option, which prompts children on the plan to confirm any in-app purchase.
To remove individual apps or fine-tune iMessage functionality, navigate to Settings, then Apps > Messages > iMessage Apps. Toggle applications on or off here. You can also delete installed apps by tapping and holding the app icon until a dropdown menu appears, then selecting Remove App.
Apple also provides customization options for certain iMessage app features. For example, you can adjust how voice recording functions behave within iMessage, alternating between voice note and dictation modes.
