Lauren Hemp’s Manchester City Legacy: From Teenage Prodigy to Club Icon at 26

Lauren Hemp’s tenure at Manchester City has mirrored a golden era for the Lionesses, during which she played a pivotal role in securing consecutive European Championships.

Arriving from Bristol City as a highly rated teenager in 2018, Hemp has matured into a world-class talent in Manchester. Her contributions were formally recognized in 2024 with an MBE for services to football, followed shortly by a three-year contract extension. Last season, that commitment yielded tangible silverware as the club claimed its first Women’s Super League title in a decade alongside the Women’s FA Cup.

Jayne Comer, secretary of the Manchester City Supporters Club and a season-ticket holder for over ten years, believes Hemp has already attained legendary status. “She is absolutely loved by us all,” Comer told BBC Sport. “She remained fiercely loyal to the club when, let’s face it, she could have signed for any team in the world. The fact she stayed and gives her all every week means so much to us. We’ve had the privilege of watching one of the best players in the world.”

Comer emphasized the excitement Hemp generates weekly. “Every week she gets us all on our feet. When she gets the ball, it’s exciting. You always feel like something spectacular might happen.” Having watched Hemp before her City move, Comer ranks her among the greatest players the club has ever had. “She is always one of the first names on the teamsheet for any manager and looks like somebody who loves to play football.”

Recalling Hemp’s early days at Bristol City, Comer noted the immediate impression she made. “Even back then, you could see what a talent she was. She just oozed potential. I was really excited to see how she would progress and I have not been disappointed. What a player! I count myself lucky every time I see her playing in sky blue.”

Manchester City travel to Aston Villa in the WSL on Sunday (18:30 BST).
