A shooting on Monday in a Jewish neighborhood of Montreal tragically resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including a police officer, a resident, and the alleged assailant, as reported by Montreal police.
Authorities have not yet clarified the motive behind the attack in an area known for its kosher restaurants and marketplaces that serve Montreal’s substantial Jewish community.
“It is with profound sorrow that we confirm the death of one of our police officers in the line of duty,” the Montreal Police Authority said in a statement posted on X.
Separate statements indicated that the suspect and a resident were also deceased, and officials urged residents to steer clear of the area.
The identity of the resident has not been released, but law‑enforcement officials were expected to brief the media later that day.
The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), a prominent Canadian civil society organization, announced that it was closely monitoring the situation.
“While we await further details regarding this tragic incident, we encourage community members to remain vigilant,” the CIJA added.
