The upcoming true‑crime limited series features Melissa McCarthy and Clive Owen portraying Patsy and John Ramsey.
After Paramount+ shelved The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey last year, Netflix picked up the limited series, slated for a winter release. As Tudum notes, the show will “explore how the murder of the six‑year‑old captivated and divided the nation.” Melissa McCarthy and Clive Owen will play JonBenét’s parents, Patsy and John Ramsey.
The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey will examine multiple viewpoints, including those of the Ramseys, following the 1996 Christmas‑night murder of their daughter. Emily Mitchell takes on the role of JonBenét, while Garrett Hedlund, Alison Pill, and Clifton Collins Jr. portray Boulder Police Department detectives.
Paramount+ greenlit the series in 2024 under the working title Unspeakable: The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey. According to the Hollywood Reporter, production wrapped in early 2025, but the project was shelved after Skydance acquired Paramount+. Similar to Netflix’s Monster anthology, the show was originally conceived to rotate through different true‑crime cases each season.
Netflix has previously explored the JonBenét Ramsey case; in 2024 it released the three‑part docuseries Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey?.
The Ramsey case has fascinated true‑crime enthusiasts for decades, spawning numerous adaptations and documentaries since the 1996 tragedy. This year marks the thirtieth anniversary of the murder.
The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey is produced by 101 Studios, the company behind Landman, Yellowstone, and Mayor of Kingstown. Showrunner Richard LaGravenese developed the series alongside writers Harrison Query and Tommy Wallach.
