Francesco Akira has earned a position as the number one contender for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship by triumphing in a four‑way contest on Tuesday.
His victory over Master Wato, SHO, and Kosei Fujita guarantees a title match at Korakuen Hall on July 6, where YOH will defend his belt.
During the bout, YOH was drawn into an altercation intended to curb interference from SHO’s House of Torture stablemates. While YOH was briefly incapacitated, Akira aided in reviving his opponent, after which Akira delivered a stern warning that YOH’s reign is already finished and that he will inflict a decisive blow upon both YOH and his supporters.
Akira then delivered a spectacular belt shot to YOH and posed triumphantly with the championship afterward.
YOH won the 2026 Best of the Super Juniors tournament before capturing the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship from DOUKI, marking the beginning of his inaugural reign. This forthcoming match will be YOH’s first title defense.
Despite being a United Empire member and a former IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champion, Akira has yet to claim singles gold in NJPW.
The July 6 event is part of NJPW’s “Road to G1” series and will be broadcast live on NJPW World.
