Philippine Ferry Fire Death Toll Rises to 35 as Search Continues for Missing

The Philippine Coast Guard reports that 30 bodies have been recovered from the ferry’s wreckage, raising the death toll to 35.

The MV June Aster, carrying more than 130 passengers, caught fire on Wednesday while approaching its destination, the tourist hotspot of Coron, after leaving Manila.

Forty‑three individuals were rescued, many of whom are receiving hospital care, while search efforts continue for over 50 people still missing.

The Coast Guard indicates that additional bodies remain aboard the vessel, which could not be accessed until Friday because of toxic fumes and lingering heat.

During a press conference, Coast Guard spokesperson Commodore Noemie Cayabyab said most victims were recovered from the ship’s sleeping area, where the ferry had been traveling for a 22‑hour journey.

“Agencies are now conducting the proper recovery and identification of the remains in line with established procedures,” Cayabyab stated.

“We acknowledge the grief of the families affected by this tragic incident,” she added.

Earlier, the Coast Guard said initial survivor interviews indicated the fire originated in the cargo hold, and noted that some passengers were not wearing life vests.

A survivor rescued by a rescue boat told the BBC he heard frantic cries as the fire broke out and was trampled by panicked people while attempting to escape.

The Philippines’ maritime authority is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Built in 2002, the ferry possessed valid safety certificates and passed an enforcement inspection in March; however, investigators are examining possible manifest discrepancies, cargo loading integrity, and crew emergency response protocols, according to the Palawan Daily.

The vessel was carrying 117 passengers and 17 crew members.

Atienza Interisland Ferries, the vessel’s operator, has pledged full cooperation with the inquiry.

“Our hearts remain with the affected families, and we will not rest until all individuals are accounted for,” the company said in a Thursday statement.
