For millions of patients, daily statin pills represent the standard approach to cholesterol management. Two clinical trials, one in the United States and another in China, now suggest that a single injection could replace this routine, offering sustained control of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol—the primary driver of heart disease, the world’s leading cause of death.
A Cleveland Clinic-led trial across Australia, New Zealand, and Britain tested CTX310, a gene-editing nanodrug, in 15 volunteers. The therapy uses microscopic particles to deliver CRISPR components directly into liver cells, targeting the ANGPTL3 gene that regulates blood fat levels.
Individuals born with natural mutations that inhibit ANGPTL3 exhibit remarkably low cholesterol and triglycerides and rarely develop heart disease. CTX310 is designed to mimic this protective genetic switch, potentially providing durable lipid reduction from one treatment.
