BRATISLAVA, Slovakia — The heads of all eight of Slovakia’s regional administrations were successfully reelected, according to official results released on Sunday.
Incumbents backed by the ruling coalition of populist Prime Minister Robert Fico secured two regional leadership positions in Saturday’s election. Meanwhile, candidates from the pro-Western parliamentary opposition claimed four regions, with independent candidates retaining the remaining two posts.
In a closely watched race in the eastern Prešov region, Milan Majerský of the opposition Christian Democrats secured victory with over 48% of the vote, defeating a candidate backed by the far-right Republic party, who garnered 35%. According to recent polls, the Republic party is currently the third most popular political force in the country.
Slovakia, a nation of 5.4 million people and a key member of both the European Union and NATO, is scheduled to hold its national parliamentary election next year.
In a separate municipal vote historically dominated by independents, opposition figure Matúš Vallo was reelected for a third term as mayor of the capital city, Bratislava.
