Major musical and cinematic figures, including Noel Gallagher, Johnny Marr, Kneecap, and Paul Weller, have united to sign an open letter in support of the residents of Garvaghy Road in Belfast.
The road in Portadown, County Armagh, has entered an 11th day of tense deadlock following a decision to allow the unionist Orange Order to march through the predominantly nationalist area.
If permitted to proceed, this march would mark the first time in nearly three decades that the route has been opened to the Order. For 28 years, the Parades Commission consistently blocked the Orange Order from marching along Garvaghy Road, a measure implemented due to a history of severe violence. This included a tragic incident in which three young brothers, aged nine, 10, and 11, were killed when their home was targeted in an Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) petrol bomb attack.
Despite those restrictions standing for nearly three decades, a recent High Court ruling has eased the regulations, granting the Orange Order permission to march along the historic route once again.

The court decision stipulated that the march could proceed with a maximum of 35 Orange Order members, starting at 8:00 AM rather than the traditional 1:00 PM. In response, local residents have voiced strong opposition and taken to the streets in an effort to overturn the decision.
First Minister Michelle O’Neill has called for an immediate reconsideration, urging Northern Ireland Secretary Sir Chris Bryant to intervene. She stated that the decision has left residents in the area suffering from “no sleep in fear and anxiety.”
An open letter addressed to Secretary Bryant is currently circulating, advocating for peace in the region and calling for the appointment of an “independent international mediator from outside Ireland and Britain” to help resolve the dispute.
“The residents of the Garvaghy Road endured years of profound trauma, fear, and disruption during the height of the parading conflicts in the 1990s,” the letter states. “After nearly three decades of hard-earned calm, it is entirely unacceptable that this community should face a return to that anxiety.”
The letter also describes the stand-off as a “stark reminder of the fragile nature of our shared peace,” urging Bryant to “exercise courageous political leadership at this critical juncture by looking to the international community for a neutral arbiter who can guide all sides toward a shared, peaceful future.”
Among the high-profile figures who have signed the letter are musical icons Noel Gallagher, Paul Weller, and Johnny Marr, alongside Kneecap, Nadine Shah, Massive Attack’s Robert Del Naja, Madness frontman Suggs, and Dexy’s Midnight Runners’ Kevin Rowland.

“It is paramount that the residents be robustly protected from any form of forced processions that disregard their consent, safety, and right to live in peace free from intimidation,” the letter continued.
“We submit this appeal as individuals who have seen firsthand the immense benefit that the harmony of British-Irish relations brings to these islands, offering a powerful blueprint for what can be achieved through genuine partnership.”
