Tom Westley has relinquished the Essex captaincy after seven seasons in the role.
Essex concluded the season in eighth place in Division One of the County Championship, just one position above the relegation zone.
Nevertheless, Essex’s continued presence in the top flight depends on the result of Leicestershire’s appeal against a 27‑point penalty for violating pitch regulations.
A draw with Glamorgan in their final fixture left Essex 25 points ahead of Leicester; should Leicester’s appeal succeed and the points be restored, Essex would face relegation.
Westley, the club’s longest‑serving player, described captaining Essex as his “greatest honour”.
“Personally, I believe my greatest contribution lies in scoring runs and helping Essex win, something I have struggled to do this season,” the 37-year-old told the club website., external
“For that reason, I believe now is the appropriate moment for a change and for the club to pursue a new direction.”
Essex entered the 2020 season as reigning county champions when former England Test batter Tom Westley took over the captaincy from Ryan ten Doeschate in January.
The 2020 County Championship was cancelled due to the COVID‑19 pandemic, yet Westley guided Essex to triumph in the replacement red‑ball competition, the Bob Willis Trophy.
The side secured consecutive top‑four placements in 2022, 2023 and 2024, finished sixth in 2025 and, as things stand, have narrowly avoided relegation for the 2026 season.
