“It’s a deeply online administration,” he said. “Given the brevity of public attention spans, content must be engaging.” Not all White House initiatives have been well received by the right: Pearson argued that the administration’s decision to share portions of the Epstein files with 15 right‑wing creators last year was a misstep.
Aburghazaleh, a former Media Matters reporter, argues that the administration’s growing reliance on the internet signals a more sinister agenda. She pointed to the Department of Education’s recent use of the “Malfoid” meme—a gender‑bent, fascist‑styled Harry Potter figure—to appeal to an overly online audience of “incels.” Additionally, she criticized the White House’s promotion of “AI‑generated slop and brutality” in ICE‑related advertisements, saying it turns cruelty into content rather than informing the public.
“They are trying to erode your attention span,” she said.
Aburghazaleh and Pearson occupy opposite ends of the political spectrum. Their discussion at the WIRED forum included heated debate over whether ICE facilities should be labeled “concentration camps”—a term Abughazaleh used consistently after being arrested for protesting outside an ICE facility last year (charges were later dropped following prosecutorial misconduct allegations before a grand jury). They also debated whether Elon Musk has turned X into a “bastion of free speech,” according to Pearson.
Both concurred that algorithmic reliance is increasingly creating echo chambers among young Americans across the political spectrum.
“Algorithms show us what we want to see,” Pearson said, noting that his left‑leaning friends occasionally send him articles on topics he has never encountered. “The deeper question is whether this is beneficial for society or democracy.”
Aburghazaleh concurs, adding, “We have no shared reality.”
