Bill Belichick admitted he wasn’t certain whether Nate Sheppard tops the nation in rushing yards or all‑purpose yards—though he does lead in both—but he emphasized that stopping the Duke running back will be a formidable challenge for the North Carolina defense on Saturday.
“He’s a solid receiver,” Belichick noted. “He excels at breaking tackles and gaining yards after contact. Tackling remains a priority for us, and with Sheppard it’s especially crucial; he’s exceptionally productive both as a runner and as a pass‑catcher.”
The second‑year Tar Heels coach highlighted a play from Duke’s final drive against Georgia Tech, where Sheppard hauled in a short pass and turned it into a 42‑yard gain to the Yellow Jackets’ 23‑yard line, setting up a game‑tying field‑goal attempt that Gavin Strange missed wide left.
Although Georgia Tech limited Sheppard to 99 rushing yards, he responded with 91 receiving yards, demonstrating his ability to make big plays regardless of how the ball reaches him. Nonetheless, Belichick and his staff recognize that Duke’s offense hinges on its running game.
“It all starts with the run,” he said.
