The United States men’s national team’s quest to capture their first Concacaf Gold Cup since 2021 will now unfold under a bold new structure for the 2027 edition. Scheduled to run from June 17 through July 11, the tournament will introduce significant changes to its group stage. While the competition will still feature 16 teams in total, the traditional format of four groups of four will be replaced by two larger, eight-team groups. Fifteen teams will earn their spots through the Gold Cup preliminary round, joining guest nation Saudi Arabia in the main tournament.
This strategic shift is designed to elevate the excitement and unpredictability of the group stage. By expanding the groups, each team will play four matches instead of three, adding an extra game to the schedule. Furthermore, the format introduces potential chaos as four teams from each group will advance to the knockout rounds. Despite the added group stage complexity, the knockout phase will maintain its traditional structure, proceeding as normal without additional alterations.
“The Gold Cup is our region’s premier men’s national team competition, and we are really excited about what this new format will bring to the tournament’s Group Stage,” said Concacaf President and FIFA Vice President Victor Montagliani. “Our fans want to see the best teams in our region compete against each other, and this format will create more opportunities for those matchups to happen earlier in the competition. At the same time, every match will matter, with teams facing a balanced mix of opponents and competing for a place in the knockout rounds. We believe this will make for a more competitive and exciting Gold Cup from the very first match through to the final.”
Group stage format
The method for determining matchups under this new format involves a slightly complex system. The eight teams in each group will be organized into ranking bands of two teams each. A predetermined fixture matrix will then ensure that every team plays a balanced schedule of opponents.

This structured approach is designed to prevent top-tier teams from easily securing advancement while leaving others with no chance. By balancing the matchups, the format aims to foster more competitive and interesting fixtures throughout the tournament, including the knockout stages.
Knockout stage format
Despite the major changes in the group stage, the knockout format will remain largely familiar. The four teams advancing from each of the two groups will be placed into a single-elimination bracket. The highest-finishing teams from each group will face off against the lower-finishing teams from the opposite group. There will be no reseeding, meaning the quarterfinal matchups will directly determine the semifinal pairings on the road to the championship.
