Escalating tensions across the Ethiopia-Eritrea border could threaten stability throughout the region. The Horn of Africa cannot afford another military conflict or humanitarian crisis, and renewed hostilities would jeopardize ongoing U.S. cooperation with both nations on shared priorities.
The United States strongly urges Ethiopia and Eritrea to respect each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, exercise maximum restraint, and return to the dialogue and cooperation established under their 2018 peace framework. Peace achieved through dialogue remains the most reliable path to lasting security, economic growth, and shared prosperity in the region.
