Wheel of Fortune Announcer Jim Thornton Suspended Amid Allegations of Inappropriate Chatroom Usage

New details have emerged regarding the suspension of “Wheel of Fortune” announcer Jim Thornton. According to a report by TMZ, an American Airlines passenger provided photographs of Thornton’s laptop, alleging that the announcer was accessing a disturbing chat room containing images and text associated with pedophilia.

TMZ shared several images reportedly taken by the passenger, which include messages suggesting inappropriate behavior toward minors. However, these photographs have not been independently authenticated.

The incident reportedly occurred during a flight in May. The passenger claims they alerted a flight attendant to the activity, leading authorities to question Thornton upon his arrival at LAX. Following the questioning, Thornton was permitted to leave.

The allegations have stunned industry colleagues who describe Thornton as a respected professional. Beyond his television work, he is well-known in Los Angeles for his previous tenures as a traffic anchor for KCBS-TV and a reporter for KNX 1070 Newsradio.

Thornton’s attorney, Allison Hart, has not responded to direct requests for comment. However, TMZ reports that Hart characterized the situation as a misunderstanding. She stated that since losing a close family member to suicide two years ago, Thornton has become an advocate for suicide prevention and has visited various chat rooms to offer support to individuals experiencing suicidal ideation.

Hart maintained that the site in question is legal and contains no unlawful child pornography or pedophilic content, asserting that her client did nothing wrong and never viewed or downloaded illegal material.

Thornton has not issued a public statement and maintains a minimal digital footprint, with no active social media presence or personal website. It remains unclear if he currently has talent representation following the 2024 closure of A3 Artists Agency.

Sony Pictures TV confirmed the suspension on Tuesday, stating: “We have recently been made aware of allegations concerning Jim Thornton. He has been suspended from ‘Wheel of Fortune’ and we are recasting while we conduct a thorough investigation.”

TMZ further reported that the aircraft’s pilot requested law enforcement meet Thornton at the gate upon landing. According to sources, Thornton was wearing a “Wheel of Fortune” jacket during the encounter and was released after being questioned.

Thornton joined “Wheel of Fortune” in 2010, succeeding the late Charlie O’Donnell. His extensive career also includes work as a substitute announcer for “The Price Is Right” and voice acting roles in “Celebrity Deathmatch” as Johnny Gomez, “The Cleveland Show,” and “Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!” Additionally, he provided narration for the 2001 film “Monsters, Inc.” and the Oscar-nominated short “Let’s Pollute.”
