Xbox has expanded its RPG game portfolio significantly in recent years, largely due to acquiring studios with strong genre expertise. With Bethesda, Obsidian, and inXile now part of the same ecosystem, there’s substantial potential, even as Forza Horizon studio Playground Games ventures into the space with the upcoming Fable reboot.
While development in certain areas has faced delays, including the absence of new mainline Fallout or Elder Scrolls titles since the acquisition, one Xbox RPG has successfully concluded its journey and is now confirmed for a sequel. This follow-up appears to offer even greater promise.
Chris Avellone, co-founder of Obsidian Entertainment, confirmed on X that “There is undoubtedly an Avowed 2 in production,” providing the strongest indication yet of a sequel to the 2025 fantasy RPG. Though Avellone left Obsidian over a decade ago, his industry connections lend credibility to this report.
The creative direction may shift, as George Ziets is believed to be leading the project. This represents a change from the first game, which was directed by Carrie Patel (no longer with Obsidian) and written by Kate Dollarhyde and Robert Lo.
Ziets is recognized for directing Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer, a well-received expansion for the iconic D&D RPG. He also contributed to the writing of notable Obsidian titles like Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity, as well as inXile’s Torment: Tides of Numenera.
Avowed had its flaws, with its streamlined approach dividing RPG fans. While the early narrative wasn’t Obsidian’s strongest, it eventually delivered a compelling experience built around an intriguing world. A sequel would offer an ideal chance to refine its strengths, and with Ziets at the helm, optimism is warranted.
Obsidian must successfully navigate upcoming challenges, including potential layoffs and studio closures at Xbox. While it may not fulfill the Fallout: New Vegas-style sequel many fans desire, Avowed 2 still has the potential to become one of the standout RPGs within the Xbox studio environment.
