Luanda – The African Union’s Permanent Representatives Committee convened on Tuesday to review draft documents for extraordinary sessions of the Executive Council and the Assembly of Heads of State and Government, slated for Luanda on August 29 and 30.
The session was conducted via videoconference and saw attendance from Angola’s Permanent Representative to the AU, Miguel César Domingos Bembe.
Scheduled under the theme “Strengthening mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution in Africa”, the summit will convene at the Luanda Convention Centre.
In its eighth session, the PRC reviewed draft programmes and agendas for both sessions, alongside the Luanda Decision, Action Plan, and Implementation Matrix.
The draft Luanda Decision proposes enhancements to the AU’s conflict prevention, management, and resolution mechanisms, informed by an assessment of the African Peace and Security Architecture and the African Governance Architecture.
The Action Plan outlines priorities for a more proactive, preventive approach to continental crises, while the Implementation Matrix specifies operational measures, objectives, timelines, and responsible entities.
Delegates also examined the draft declaration of the eighth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting, bringing together the AU, Regional Economic Communities, and Regional Mechanisms, set for October 4 in El Alamein, Egypt.
The extraordinary session in Luanda stems from an initiative by President João Lourenço, AU Champion for Peace and Reconciliation in Africa.
