Ange Postecoglou’s halftime substitution of Cristiano Ronaldo sparks Al-Nassr comeback victory

Ronaldo was withdrawn at halftime with Al-Nassr down to ten men and trailing 2‑0, yet the side rallied to clinch a dramatic victory over Al‑Ettifaq.

The defending Saudi Pro League champions endured a nightmare start on Tuesday, seeing goalkeeper Bento dismissed after only 12 minutes and finding themselves two goals down at halftime.

The 41‑year‑old Ronaldo, making his first start since the World Cup, exited the field in frustration at halftime and was replaced by manager Ange Postecoglou.

Yet Postecoglou’s calls were vindicated as Al‑Nassr sparked a second‑half revival.

Sadio Mané and Abdulelah Al‑Amri found the net within three minutes to level the score with 13 minutes remaining, before Mané added the winner in stoppage time.

The victory lifted Al‑Nassr to the summit of the table after three consecutive wins this season.

Former Tottenham and Nottingham Forest manager Ange Postecoglou said Ronaldo, who spread his arms in a questioning gesture toward the bench when substituted, was removed as part of a different tactical approach.

“When I made the substitutions, including taking Ronaldo off, I believed the players coming on could make an impact,” Postecoglou said.

“I came here to help the players, so as I said, I’m proud of them because every substitute made a positive contribution.”

“I’m here to help the team with what I see, and everyone knows that Ronaldo hasn’t played in a long time. He performed exceptionally well in the first half, and we opted for a different approach.”

Postecoglou took charge of Al‑Nassr last month after being dismissed by Nottingham Forest last October following just 39 days in the role.

The five‑time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo married his partner Georgina Rodríguez earlier this month and has indicated that this season is likely to be his final one as a player, allowing him to devote more time to his family.
