FC Barcelona should count Alejandro Balde in their squad now for the 2026/2027 season.

FC Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde has opted to remain at his boyhood club on the eve of the team’s La Liga home opener against Athletic Club, according to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano and COPE.
“I understand Alejandro Balde has informed Barcelona about his desire to STAY at the club and compete for a spot. His intention is clear; the decision is up to the club after exploring a sale. Only a big proposal from a top club can change the scenario from now to Deadline Day,” the Italian journalist posted on X.
The clearest indication of Balde’s status will arrive when manager Hansi Flick announces his squad list for Thursday’s clash with Athletic Club.
Balde was omitted from the matchday squad for Sunday’s 5-0 victory at Elche, a decision that fueled speculation his time in Catalonia was ending after Jijantes reported he had decided to leave.
Flick appeared to question Balde’s commitment during the pre-match press conference but insisted he had not told the 22-year-old to leave following the rout at Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero.
Meanwhile, reports surfaced linking Manchester United with a loan move including an option to buy.
Barcelona reportedly pushed for a permanent transfer, however, valuing the academy graduate at a modest €30–40 million.
Ultimately, the player’s preference often prevails in such standoffs, and Balde is entitled to remain at the club through 2028 under his current contract.
Retaining Balde Preferable to a Cut-Price Sale
After five seasons with the first team—yielding invaluable Champions League experience and three La Liga titles—the reported valuation falls well short for a player frequently ranked among the world’s best left-backs.
This is especially true when negotiating with wealthy Premier League clubs known for paying premiums. Balde could potentially command double that figure with a strong season at Spotify Camp Nou, provided he regains focus and competes with João Cancelo for the starting role.
If a departure becomes necessary, a loan with an obligation to buy exceeding the €55 million Liverpool reportedly offered for Ronald Araujo would be more appropriate.
