After completing what proved to be one of the more surprising trades in recent NBA history by moving on from Jaylen Brown in exchange for Paul George, the Boston Celtics are reportedly exploring additional moves to bolster their roster.
While the Celtics maintain a strong foundation with Jayson Tatum and key role players, the decision to pivot from Brown—despite his championship pedigree—has left questions about Boston’s long-term trajectory. Nevertheless, league reports suggest the organization is not finished reshaping the roster, and that work could have implications for the San Antonio Spurs.
According to reports, Celtics forward Sean Deveney noted that Keldon Johnson of the Spurs is among several potential trade targets, along with Herbert Jones of the Pelicans and Lu Dort of the Thunder. Deveney wrote that any acquisition would need to represent an upgrade, particularly at the power forward position, where Boston currently plans to utilize Jayson Tatum and Sam Hauser in primarily offensive rebounding and defensive roles, albeit somewhat mismatched.
Johnson has established himself as a reliable contributor during his time in San Antonio. Given the structure of the Spurs’ roster and their eventual salary cap considerations, retaining a proven player like Johnson may outweigh the benefits of executing a trade without securing ideal returns.
As San Antonio continues to build for the future, maintaining veteran presence while developing younger talent remains a priority. At this stage, keeping Johnson intact appear to align more closely with the team’s best interests than facilitating a move prompted by another team’s redesign efforts.
