The United States’ World Cup run ended earlier than expected after a 4‑1 loss to Belgium, prompting scrutiny of Christian Pulisic’s performance in the team’s most crucial match.
After the match, Pulisic’s post‑game remarks were viewed by many as detached, sparking debate over his level of urgency and commitment in what was arguably the biggest game of his career.
Pulisic told reporters, “I twisted my ankle and knee on the same play. I’ll have time to recover; it’s just an unfortunate way to end the tournament.”
Pulisic sustained a twisted ankle and knee during the Belgium match, which likely hindered his contribution in the subsequent loss. On Wednesday he posted a sincere note on Instagram, thanking fans for their steadfast backing of the U.S. squad throughout the World Cup.
Although expectations were high for Pulisic to lead the team, his overall influence fell short. In four World Cup appearances he did not score, managing only two shots on target and a single assist.
Pulisic will now shift his focus back to AC Milan, aiming to move past the World Cup disappointment and prepare for the upcoming Serie A campaign.
The United States will now look ahead to 2030. After falling short on home soil, the program will spend the next four years working to convert its promise into a breakthrough during the joint hosting of the tournament by Spain, Morocco, and Portugal.
