Graham Platner suspended his U.S. Senate campaign in Maine on Wednesday, allowing Democrats in the state to select a new candidate as they aim to regain control of the chamber.
“We believe that for the movement to continue, it can’t be me,” Platner stated in a social media video posted Wednesday. “And for that reason we are suspending campaign operations.”
He clarified, “This decision isn’t due to the allegations. It’s because the systems being stripped from us by those in power are unacceptable.”
Platner, an oysterman, attracted progressive support by positioning himself as an outsider challenging the Washington establishment, though he faced mounting challenges. When Politico reported a woman’s claim of sexual assault against him on Monday, he denied the accusation but indicated he was reevaluating his campaign against Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME).
“The allegations are false; they don’t reflect reality,” Platner asserted.
A former romantic partner, Jenny Racinot, disclosed to Politico that Platner compelled her into a sexual encounter five years ago.
Platner had until Monday to withdraw from the race. Democrats will have until July 27 to choose a replacement. The Maine Democratic Party intends to organize a nominating convention, though no specifics about the process have been released.
