Sheryl Crow Reinvites Cars Into Storytelling With Fresh Theme Launch

Two decades have passed since Sheryl Crow first enchanted Lightning McQueen, Mater, and the other sentient automobiles of Radiator Springs. Opening scenes from the 2006 Pixar classic Cars depict rookie Lightning McQueen in daring runs for the Piston Cup, while Crow’s song “Real Gone” carries the moment. Although “Real Gone” has not yet surpassed Rascal Flatts’ version of “Life Is A Highway,” the track remains broadly popular—currently ranking third among Crow’s most‑played tracks on Spotify. Now, after countless years, Crow is retracing her footsteps in the franchise.

As a Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, Sheryl Crow is set to debut her forthcoming album Pick You Up later this autumn—a release often described as echoing the way Radiotop springs’ locals lifted Lightning McQueen, challenging his ego and highlighting teamwork.

At the most recent D23 presentation, Disney unveiled the upcoming spin‑off series Cars: Lightning Racers (“scheduled for Disney Jr. and Disney+ next year”), confirming that Crow will supply the theme song.

Sheryl Crow appeared at the D23 expo, performing her brand new Cars: Lightning Racers theme song “Built To Last,” as well as “Real Gone.” In fact, Billboard reports that the Cars: Lightning Racers soundtrack will feature “Built To Last” and 10 more original songs from Sheryl Crow. She’s making a whole damn Cars: Lightning Racers album! Maybe that’s why Pick You Up only has seven tracks — she had to save up all her music for the Cars show. Watch a clip of her performing “Built To Last” below.”

A short clip of her rendition of “Built To Last” can be seen below.
