I meet Sienna Spiro in the Ludlow Hotel lobby on a busy day. She’s just been asked to leave her room after staying well past checkout—“I thought they’d let me stay, but they kicked me out!”—and is juggling a conversation with me, a photo shoot, and a flight back to London.
The whirlwind schedule is no surprise—Spiro is one of today’s most sought‑after newcomers. Just four years after leaving school to focus on music, the 20‑year‑old has amassed 1.2 billion global streams and debuted her first album, Visitor, with Capitol Records. The record builds on the massive success of her lead single, “Die on This Hill,” a haunting piano ballad distinguished by her deep contralto voice. Her performance of the song on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon earlier this year drew multiple standing ovations.
Spiro shares her thoughts with Vogue about this pivotal moment.
Vogue: “‘Die on This Hill’ is everywhere, your debut album is out, and you’ve just sold out your world tour. Where is your head at these days?”
Sienna Spiro: “All I can think about right now is a chicken sandwich. (laughs) Since I’m in New York, Chick‑fil‑A is on my mind, but really I’m just grateful. I’m trying to stay present and soak it all in—it feels surreal, almost unreal.”
Vogue: “Can you describe how ‘Die on This Hill’ came about? I understand it was almost accidental.”
Sienna Spiro: “I was in LA scrolling through YouTube when I saw someone play ‘Bohemian Rhapsody.’ Even though I’m not a great pianist, I wanted to try learning it. I attempted, but it didn’t work, so I gave up and mucked around with the wrong chords I’d figured out, looping them over and over. At the same time, I’d been meaning to write about the phrase ‘die on this hill’—it’s a saying I like. So I started pairing the phrase with those chords. The next day I headed into the studio with producers Omar Fedi and Michael Pollack, whom I’d just met, and we finished the track that very day.”
