These performance advantages shrink the window available for air‑defence reactions and halve the time civilians possess to seek shelter after an alert.
Recent strikes have crippled apartment blocks, commuter rail services, and commercial malls. Russian tactics have shifted to disseminate multiple simultaneous launcher waves rather than relying primarily on overnight assaults.
On the final Thursday, over 100 of the 140 attack drones released by Russia in a single sortie were jet‑powered, as reported by the Ukrainian Air Force.
How many can Russia make?
Complex turbine engines demand specialized manufacturing and limited global component availability, imposing a firm ceiling on production volume.
Experts caution that this restriction may curtail future output despite Russia’s drive to maintain heavy deployment rates.
“The entire rationale behind this class of weapon rests on mass production at minimal cost,” observed military analyst Franz‑Stefan Gadi y. When targeting hundreds of disposable units, further refinement becomes impractical.”
“There is a strict upper bound on sophistication achievable for systems intended for mass fielding,” he added. “Machined components and supply chains cannot scale as swiftly as basic gasoline‑powered drones.”

Since the 2022 onset of this prolonged war, relentless technological progress shapes the battlefield, prompting constant counter‑measure development. Observers predict this trend will persist.
Jet‑powered drones represent a growing threat that will intensify through the winter as Russian output expands, notes Dara Massicot, senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Nonetheless, she expresses confidence that defensive countermeasures are underway.
Four Ukrainian companies have built interceptors designed to shoot down jet‑equipped platforms; these prototypes remain in early testing.
